Quote of the week...

"What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried?"

- Abraham Lincoln

TOP PHOTO: The statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial is shown on the eve of Lincoln's birthday Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, in Washington. Twenty-some patriotic organizations will participate in a formal wreath laying ceremony at the memorial on Monday, sponsored by The Lincoln Birthday National Commemorative Committee. The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1922 by President Harding. (AP Photo/Craig Harmon)  The HRC will be having our own Lincoln Day celebration in Eliot House Dining Hall, this Wednesday, February 12th at 7 PM.  Read below for more details.

I.  Lincoln Day Dinner – Wednesday

This is it!  The HRC’s only all-club gathering of the semester!  At 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 12th, 2003, in the Eliot Dining Hall, the HRC will honor our party and its father with our annual Lincoln Day Dinner.  Lincoln Day Dinners are a grand Republican tradition, so be sure to join us for a fancy dinner (business attire appreciated) and renowned speaker Tom Palmer from the Cato Institute!  All other Massachusetts College Republicans are also welcome.  Come enjoy dinner with your conservative friends and pay tribute to a great man.  The event is not ticketed—just RSVP right now:

To RSVP, just click here and hit send on your e-mail client.  It will create an automatic e-mail to go to Stephanie (skendall@fas).

II.  Essay Contest about Election 2002

IOP Visiting Fellow Andrew Cuomo is soliciting essays from Harvard undergraduates on the implications of the November 5, 2002 elections.  One essay will be selected and included in a compilation of opinions to be published by Random House. For more information about Secretary Cuomo's book and the undergraduate essay, please visit www.iop.harvard.edu/cuomo_essay.pdf.

III.  Ice Skating with CWC

Are you up for an evening of fun?  Join the girls of CWC for ice skating at the Frog Pond, with dinner to follow, on Sunday, February 16th at 6:00.  All are welcome and remember, there's no school on Monday!  Email Svetlana (meyerzon@fas) if you are interested in attending, and she’ll send you more information.

IV.  Internship Opportunity with Governor Romney

You helped him become Governor—now help him again!  Gov. Romney's press office is looking for interns, part-time, for THIS SEMESTER.  For more information, you can contact the HRC Intern Coordinator Jennie Schiffman (schiffm@fas) or Ben Dobbs (ben_dobbs@ksg), or to apply, e-mail or fax a resume and cover letter to:

Jackie Haskell
Director of Media Services
Governor's Press Office
Room 265 State House
Boston , MA 02133
Tel: (617) 725-4025
Fax: (617) 727-9416
email: jacqueline.hassell@state.ma.us

Interns will prepare news clips, answer phones, field media requests, assist in general office work, do research for speechwriters, logistics for press conferences, write news summaries, distribute press releases, and film events.  Maturity, excellent communications skills, and ability to work on deadline necessary. A minimum of 15 hours a week commitment is necessary.  Positions are unpaid, and students may be able to arrange college credit.  Students should be sophomores, juniors, or seniors (upperclassmen preferred). Specific duties and responsibilities vary, but have in common the expectation that interns have computer skills and are familiar with general office duties.

V.  HRC Summer-in-Washington Program

If you're interested in working for a politician or in a think-tank this summer, the HRC is here to help!  Email Jennie Schiffman (schiffm@fas) and let us know what you are interested in working on.  Also, if you are interested in a recommendation from the Republican Club, please email Svetlana (meyerzon@fas).  We want to help!

VI.  Become a Dues-Paid Member!

There are many perks of becoming a dues-paid member of the HRC, from getting priority in all lotteried events, invitations to exclusive events, help in finding summer internships, to getting to vote and run in HRC elections.  To join, send a $5 check made out to “Harvard Republican Club” via University Mail to the new HRC Treasurer, Jeff Clemens, 75 Lowell Mail Ctr. or attend any HRC event and give $5 to a board member.
